Watermelons are both a fruit and vegetable, but thanks to their sweet taste they are most commonly considered a fruit. Watermelon is a sweet and refreshing low calorie summer snack. It provides hydration as it has a very high water content, and also essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Very few people actually know that watermelon is a berry.

It is usually eaten raw and the rind is sometimes preserved as a pickle. The watermelon plant is an annual that grows well in hot climates.

Health Benefits

Staying hydrated is important for your body to function properly. Watermelon comprises 92% water, making it a great choice for daily water intake. It also helps in body temperature regulation, normal organ function, nutrient delivery to cells and alertness. 

Watermelon is also a rich source of citrulline, an amino acid that may improve exercise performance. Plus, it boasts antioxidants, including vitamin C, carotenoids, lycopene, and cucurbitacin E, which improve the heart health and improve blood pressure.

Watermelon has more of this nutrient than any other fruit or veggie -- even tomatoes. A melon with bright red colour flesh has more lycopene than on with yellow or orange. And lycopene helps prevent cancer.

Storage and Usage

Watermelons are ripe when they are picked up, so they don’t continue to ripen and soften much at room temperature. Since the melons are picked up when ripe, they develop their full flavor.

A whole watermelon can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week or it can also be kept at room temperature for a week or two.

A watermelon which has been cut should be wrapped in plastic, refrigerated and used within three days. Freezing the cut watermelon will increase the time up to which it can be consumed but the texture will be soft when thawed and this goes well for smoothies.
